The Campaign

#StopSmokingBeforeItStarts

Every year tobacco kills

15,000 Australians

That’s more than drug and alcohol deaths and road fatalities combined

Tobacco is the single greatest preventable cause of death and disease in the world. Tobacco prevention and cessation must be addressed. The Eliminate Cancer Initiative Tobacco program is a global tobacco control effort that integrates policy, education and services to eliminate tobacco use for the next generation.

Increasing the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 will help reduce tobacco use among young people, save lives and help make the next generation tobacco-free.

The Facts

18 and 19 years old smokers are a major supplier of cigarettes for younger kids, who rely on friends and classmates to buy them.

19 out of 20 adult smokers become daily smokers before the age of 21.

Our Message

Tobacco companies spend $8.9 billion a year ($1 million every hour) to market their deadly and addictive products, much of it aimed at young people.

Tobacco companies know that if they don’t capture new users by their early 20s, its unlikely that they ever will fill their pipeline of lifelong customers.

Campaign Initiative

Increasing the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 will help reduce tobacco use among young people, save lives and help make the next generation tobacco-free.

Campaign targets

Decrease tobacco use by 12% and deaths by 10% and ultimately create a tobacco-free generation.

21+

If Australia adopts this simple but effective policy of raising the age of tobacco purchase to 21, many countries are likely to be inspired by our action.
